#9 – WENDY DARLING, THE STEADFAST

The journey is mostly uneventful. Everyone keeps an eye out for incoming aircraft, but the skies are clearer than a freshly windexed windshield. You finally get to enjoy hot showers and meals again.

As the ship nears England, Jane stops by the small island again to drop off the illegal ship armaments. Now completely devoid of weapons, the ship continues on its way.

Shortly afterwards, you watch the waves on a sundeck above the bridge with a bottle of sparkling apple cider in hand. Kim, her torso covered in bandages, sits next to you.

"YES!" exclaims an excited voice from behind you. "What now, suckers! Give it, give it all here!" You turn around to see a grinning Anna collecting money from disgruntled marines and sailors. It seems she just won a big hand at poker.

Elsa, who's sitting beside Anna, peers at the cards. "So that's a four of a kind?" she asks.

"Yeah. It's one of the highest hands in the game. Ramirez had a flush. It's pretty high too, which is why he lost so much money to me," Anna replies. PFC Ramirez just gives her a death glare.

As you watch this scene, you pull your jacket closer around you. Despite the noonday sun, you're feeling pretty chilly. You turn to Kim and ask, "You have any idea what we're going to do now?"

Kim attempts to shrug, but grimaces and stops. After a sigh, she says, "I've told Jane to make headway to London. I have a contact there we can trust. We have to find out from her what's happening in Disney."

Another heart spasm causes you to grip the railings. They're getting more frequent now. "You wouldn't happen to have any more of that liquid true love lying around anywhere, would you?" you ask with a weak chuckle.

Kim looks at you for a moment with what might be concern in her eyes. "Don't worry, we'll figure something out," she says quietly.

At that moment, Jane comes climbing up to the deck and waves at them. "We're in sight of London harbour! We'll be there in ten--!" She is interrupted by an explosion. The resultant rocking of the ship sends people sprawling to the ground. Jane, gripping tightly to the railing, leans over and shouts down at the bridge crew, "What was that?"

Amelia, who had been standing watch in the bridge, shouts up at her, "I don't know! We hit something, and we've lost all propulsion."

"Are we sinking?"

After a moment, the Amelia responds. "Engineering reports that hull damage is not critical. But the water screws are in a real bad way."

"Bloody hell," Jane mutters. She disappears down into the bridge. It's not long before the sound of a boat motor slowly starts to fill the air. A small patrol boat emblazoned with the black Disney logo pulls up alongside Kerchak.

The captain of the boat uses a loudspeaker to broadcast his voice to the ship: "Vessel, you have attempted to illegally enter Disney territory. Prepare to be boarded and searched."

"Get stuffed, you dickheaded wanker!" someone shouts back. You're pretty sure it was Jane.

The Disney ship captain is unfazed. "You have until the count of ten to lower your loading ramp. If you do not comply, we WILL open fire."

On the bridge, Jane is about to hurl another nasty insult when Calhoun comes up to her and stops her. With a devilish grin, the marine tells Jane, "I see no harm in letting them in."

Three minutes and twenty-seven gunshots later, Calhoun's marines are on the patrol boat rolling corpses into the water. The Disney naval uniforms have been stripped off of their owners, and some of Kerchak's mess crew are hard at work scrubbing the blood off of them. On Kerchak, Jane turns to face Calhoun, who is calmly observing her marines at work. "You scare me," says the British woman.

As soon as preparations are complete, Calhoun, her marines, Anna, Kristoff, and you don the enemies' uniforms. When you see Anna emerge from below decks in the blue and white outfit and cap, you can't help but laugh a little.

"What's so funny?" the red-headed woman snaps.

"Oh, nothing. You just look a bit too...innocent for that uniform."

Anna comically sticks her nose up and marches away to her boyfriend, feigning offense. When Kristoff sees her, he lets out a chuckle too.

Elsa and Kim approach you. "Where do I fit in?" Elsa asks.

"You're coming with me," you say, pointing at Elsa. "You, though," you continue, now pointing at Kim, "you're going to have to stay on the ship. You're not ready to fight."

To your surprise, Kim agrees. "I know when to back out of a mission," she says. She reaches into a pocket and hands you a piece of paper. "I've written down the name and all relevant information about the contact."

You take the paper. It gives you a name--Wendy Darling--and the address of a club called "Second Star to the Right." "Thanks Kim," you say. Not knowing what else to do, you turn to leave.

"Hey, John." You turn around and look at Kim. "You came this far. You're going to make it."

You give a quick nod and board the patrol boat with Elsa. Jane, Amelia, and Kim wave at the boat as it retreats into the horizon.

The patrol boat, ripping through the water at about forty knots, reaches the Thames in ten minutes. To nobody's surprise, it is bristling with Disney warships. As one of the bigger destroyers pass by, the navigator inches away from it.

"Don't get jittery, Wakowski," says Calhoun. "We need to avoid suspicion. Keep your distance, though, but don't look like you're trying to keep your distance."

"How do I go about doing that, Master Sergeant?" Wakowski asks.

"I don't know. Steer casual."

Wakowski sighs and continues to steer the ship. As they enter the Thames and travel upriver, a voice comes in on the radio. "PCE-261, report. What tripped the mines?"

Calhoun looks at you and tilts her head in the radio's direction. Getting the point, you respond to the query. "Just some, uh, people trying to run the blockade. We sunk them. You know, as an example for the others."

"What?" The voice on the other end seems genuinely aggravated. "Why would you do something like that?"

"I...uh...I thought that was how we operated, sir." You look around at the others. Calhoun is raising an eyebrow at you.

"You're not supposed to kill civilians! You know what that's going to do to our PR? Get your ass down to HQ. The major's gonna have a field day with you."

"Yes, sir," you say in your most reluctant voice. You cut the channel.

"Good going, numbnuts," Calhoun says. You just back away into a corner.

"So now what?" Anna asks.

"We're obviously not going to their HQ," Calhoun responds. "Wakowski, land us where they can't see us. We're going to have to travel on foot. We'll have to be quick; when they find that boat, they're going to be looking for us."

Wakowski complies, and docks at a little inlet by some trees. Everyone disembarks. Traveling some ways inland, you come across a long line of clothes set out to dry. Seizing the opportunity, everyone changes into civilian clothes.

You lead the way with your PDA's GPS. The narrow streets are mostly abandoned, but signs of Disney's occupation are apparent. Flags with the Disney mouse silhouette adorn various buildings, and squads of soldiers can be seen on patrol.

One such patrol comes dangerously close. Ever the efficient marine, Calhoun silently orders everyone down, and the entourage drops behind a row of fences. A squad of Disney soldiers led by a red-haired man in a gray coat come into sight. Anna and Elsa, who are crouching nearby, both cover their mouths as though in surprise.

As they slowly pass by, you wait with bated breath. The red-haired man stares straight forward as he walks, a certain fire in his eyes. As soon as they pass, you let out your breath, and everyone stands up.

"Is that who I think it was?" Anna questions.

"Who? Who was that?" you ask.

"Hans," Elsa answers. "Let's just say we hoped never to see him again."

The rest of the way to the address is uneventful. Calhoun ordered the group to spread out along the streets to minimize attention, but there are no more close encounters. Eventually, you're looking up at "Second Star to the Right."

"Another club?" you mutter to yourself as you enter with the others.

Since it's early afternoon, there's very few people. The marines, Anna, and Kristoff spread out around the club while you go up to the bartender with Elsa and ask for Wendy Darling. You also mention that Kim sent you. The bartender nods, and is back with a brunette woman in a dark blue club dress. The woman motions at you to follow. You and Elsa comply, leaving the others to keep watch on the club floor.

You follow the woman up to an office on the top floor of the building. There, you and Elsa sit across from the woman in leather sofas.

"Wendy Darling, right?" you start.

"That's my name," Wendy responds with a smile. "And judging by your company, you're John."

You nod. "How did you...?"

Wendy sits back in her sofa. "I was also one of Mr. Disney's confidants. He told me about the mission he sent Kim on. It seems Elsa is here willingly, correct?"

Elsa nods.

"Then that means you're on the run too."

"Yeah," you say. "But we're totally in the dark why. We want to know what happened, and a way to get Elsa to safety."

"Oh, the first part's easy," Wendy says. "Mr. Disney died."

"It's true, then..." Elsa says.

"Unfortunately. He was a great man. Sometimes stubborn and arrogant, but great nonetheless. I don't know if he died a natural death, or someone killed him, but I do know that the commander of all Disney's armed forces--"

"Langdon," you interject.

"Indeed, Langdon. He's convinced a majority of Disney to follow him. You should hear some of his speeches, he makes some valid points. But I know men like him. He wants to sell out this corporation, sacrifice quality for quantity in order to make more money, all while reveling in his power. That's something I cannot allow."

"Is there nobody we can turn to?" Elsa inquires.

Wendy furrows her eyebrows. "Nobody in Europe. Langdon's coup has completely overtaken this sector. But, in the days before Langdon took over London, I received communication overseas that a sizable rebellion was forming on the east coast of the US. If there's anyone that can help you, they'll be there."

"How are we going to get there?" you ask.

Wendy smiles. "All we need is faith, trust, and a little bit of pixy dust."

You and Elsa exchange uneasy glances.
